Studio Ōtori works with a variety of domestic and exotic hardwoods and softwoods.  Whenever possible, the studio uses
wood suppliers that support sustainable forestry practices.
For shoji projects we offer a variety of natural 'rice' papers as well as a number of more durable synthetic options.

Please contact the studio if you have any specific questions about materials.

(wood and stained wood samples coming soon)

Washi materials:

Warlon- a Japanese made rice paper with a coat of PVC resin on both sides.  0.2 mm thick (flexible), durable, washable, comes in white and amber with a standard rice paper fiber pattern (called un-ryu, or "cloud dragon").  Some other patterns are available by special request.

Lumasite- an American made rigid composite plastic sheet- basically a thin sheet of spun fiberglass sandwiched between two PVC sheets. 3/32" is the standard thickness typically used by the studio, but for very large panels, 1/8" or thicker is available. Extremely durable, washable, comes in clear / white in varying opacities, and in light blue and light green.

Rice paper- actually a misnomer, as most rice papers are made from pulped mulberry bark.  Japanese handmade papers, of varying weights and tones from white to beige.  A number of papers with watermark patterns and added speckle material (bark, fibers, leaves, etc.) are available.  More durable than they look, but they are paper, after all, and are subject to tearing, puncture, and possible warp in rapidly changing humidity conditions.

Other- the studio will try to acommodate your requests if you are looking for something you do not see here, or if you would like to provide your own material (fabric, paper, etc.)  Custom stained glass inserts can be provided by an associated artist for some panel conditions- just ask!  Please note that the studio will not work with any type of untempered glass for a panel intended to be installed below a line 30" above the floor.
